A cold day on Mt Willard

January 9, 2010 § Leave a comment

Jerry and I went to Mt Willard today. We were looking for ice climbs in an alpine environment. We started on Gully Number 1. The route was in fine shape glistening in the sun. We climbed Number 1 in one long 60 meter pitch then rapped off around mid day. Our next route was Cinema Gully – I have never seen the route in this condition. The ice was thick for climbing and for belays. Usually Cinema is quite thin – one need to search around for adequate screw placements

and fuss around to gain a solid belay. It was a cold day but we moved quickly to keep warm. Jerry and I enjoyed a fine alpine climbing experience in the sun on Mt Willard

Two parties on Cinema Gully early in the day.
Jerry arriving at the belay pitch three Cinema Gully. If you venture to Mt Willard plan on deep snow on the approach and descent of both routes.
