New Hampshire Ice Climbing Frankenstein Jan 2010

January 18, 2010 § Leave a comment

Torin came up for the weekend to tune up his skills. We have a week long trip coming up in February and he is getting his systems dialed. It had been a few years since we had climbed at Frankenstein’s Amphitheater and todays ice conditions were good. Saturday we went expecting to find the weekend crowds but the place was empty for most of the day. Weather was very warm keeping us on the shaded routes. Pegasis was in fine shape, along with Pegasis with the rock finish, the column getting to the rock moves was huge . After these routes we came around and climb Chia which was a bit slushy – easy to climb sketchy on the protection. It was getting late but we decided to get one more pitch in so we climbed the Smear to complete our circuit.

This area is a great place to get lots of grade 4 mileage – we climbed over 600 feet of ice.

Chia looking good, we need cold temps soon to keep it this way.

Torin climbing the final corner on Chia.

Topping out on Chia with the trestle in the background.
Smear in very fat conditions. Thanks Torin for a great day on the ice, see you in a few weeks.
