Returning to the Place it all began: Willey’s Slide and Mt. Willard

Willey’s Slide was where ice climbing started for Torin. It was 6 years ago that I went there to introduce him to ice climbing. Torin was instantly hooked on the sport and since then we have climbed all over New Hampshire and Vermont. With a very solid foundation Torin has started to lead the routes we visited in the past and yesterday we went to Willey’s Slide and Hitchcock Gully to get some mileage with Torin out front.

Torin on lead at Willey’s in the morning sun, we were treated to 4 inches of light snow in the notch.
Cruising through the upper bulge on Willey’s.
We started up the Hitchcocks at 12:30 hoping the routes would be clear of the morning crowds. Here is Upper Hitchcock in very fat conditions, with no one around.
Torin enjoying the steep exit on Upper Hitchcock. The trail to the summit was packed out by the previous parties making for an easy hike down the back side. Torin and I had a great alpine day in Crawford Notch in cold and blustery conditions.
