Sunny and Steep Wall – Red Rocks Nevada

April 3, 2010 § Leave a comment

Today we hiked to an area called Sunny and Steep. This area was developed in the winter of 1994 by New England climbers Ward – Chris Smith and friends. The wall has 16 bolted sport routes from the 5.10 to 5.12 range. This was a good area for Terry and I to check in on our contact strength after the long winter.

Hiking in the desert is an amazing experience in spring. The moisture from the winter snow and rain bring all the greenery out in the desert plants and cactus. Its very green right now and it looks like the plants may explode with color in the next few weeks.

On our return from sunny and steep we visited the Yin and Yang Crag for a hand crack called Atman. It looked short but Atman packed a punch with some strenuous jamming and a flaring top out. A great climb but a bit of schooling for me.

We enjoyed another sunny spring day of sport and crack climbing in Red Rocks.

The hillsides were covered with a variety of cacti, the most impressive were the Barrel Cactus. This group was just below the crag.

Sunny and Steep Crag – the routes are from 60 to 100 feet long. Very nice work from the New England Crew.
