Getting Down – Down East Cannon Cliff, NH

August 14, 2010 § Leave a comment

Cannon was quite busy this past Saturday. Torin and I decided to climb Down East and you can be sure there was no wait for this forgotten route. Over the years I have only seen a few parties on this route. The climb is awesome, it has just about every type of climbing one would want. The granite is very crisp, the cracks are clean, the slab traverse is exciting and the off width are short but feisty. We took the route all the way to the top climbing out of the clean rock climbing zone and into the loose alpine area. The route will challenge ones route finding skills and requires a well rounded repetoire of movement skills. The climb was an excellent choice for a busy day on Cannon.

Torin entering the first short wide section on the route. I think its rated 5.6 certainly an old school rating.

The second pitch ends with this steep 5.9 finger crack.

The mandatory garden pitch connecting the lower cracks to the Down East Slab Pitch.

Torin working across the Down East Slab 5.10.

Torin after the slab feeling very secure stuffing his body into this wide crack.

Thanks Torin, for a great day on Cannon.
